In honour of Eyecare Awareness Month, Cecelia Makiwane Hospital’s (CMH) Ophthalmology Department successfully performed 203 cataract operations during a cataract marathon from October 9th to 12th, led by department head, Dr Samkelo Mbelwa. This commendable effort enabled patients in need of vital cataract surgeries to receive intraocular lenses, thanks to strategic partnerships with key stakeholders such as ZEISS Vision, EyePharma, the Umbono Eyecare Project, Bona Ubuntu, and other valued partners.
These contributions play a crucial role in addressing the provincial cataract surgery backlog and improving access to essential eyecare for hundreds of patients across the Eastern Cape. The initiative also garnered support from local motor dealer, Meyers Motors ISUZU, which generously donated R138 000 towards providing much-needed eyecare to underserved beneficiaries throughout the Eastern Cape. This momentous contribution was marked with a heart-warming cheque handover on Monday.
“We are privileged to play a small part in this special project. Our community has supported us for many years, and we continuously look for opportunities to contribute back into the community,” shared Richard Ferrant, Chief Financial Officer at Meyers Motors, who also attended the handover.
The donation is a significant step towards enhancing the provision of quality eyecare services to these underprivileged communities. Enthusiasm on meeting the need and the impact these collaborative efforts have in improving eye health and cataract surgery outcomes is a shared feeling for all partners.
“Cataract is a problem around the world, but more especially in developing countries. We are happy to assist patients with preventable blindness and support our community through this initiative," Dr Mbelwa said. The success of this first marathon along with ongoing support from eyecare partners will allow CMH to reach more patients in need in the months ahead.
Further championing this move, CMH's Ophthalmology Department has ambitious plans in the pipelines which include hosting quarterly cataract surgery marathons. The first of these is set for November with the aim to serve 50 patients per event over two days. This initiative represents a significant giant leap towards helping beneficiaries regain their sight and reduce the burden of preventable blindness in the province.
